Supplying drinking water would have been one of the biggest problems for Noah. Each of the eight people on board would have needed a minimum of a gallon of water per day,[vii] for 370 days. That's 2,960 gallons, or over 120 tons of water – and that doesn't even start to account for the animals. The smaller animals might have needed only a few ounces of water every day, but some of the larger ones would have drunk several gallons. It's unlikely that Noah could have found space for more than 300 tons of water, which would have been nowhere near enough. Obviously he had to find a solution for this problem. One would be to collect rainwater. In rough weather that wouldn't be possible because it would have been contaminated with salt spray, but whenever the wind dropped Noah could have rigged collection sheets on deck and used them to refill water barrels. There's another possible solution, too. Space inside the ark would have been limited, but wooden barrels of fresh water will float. Extra water barrels could have been towed behind the ark, but that would have been potentially dangerous – a wave could have smashed them against the hull, certainly shattering the barrels and very possibly knocking a lethal hole in the planking. A better solution would be to lash spare barrels along the sides, just outside the deck railings. That way they would have been held secure, and they would also have added flotation to the hull in a particularly useful place. If the ark had heeled over far enough to force the barrels under water their buoyancy would have helped bring her level again. It's certain that Noah would have explored every possible way to take more water with him because he would have known how disastrous running out would be.
